Grammys 2010

Last night was a less glamorous stop in awards show season - the Grammy Awards. For some reason or another, musicians deem themselves too rocker to dress nicely and come in all sorts of ridiculous looks. So let's just say I had to adjust the curve a little and take into account who we were dealing with this time around.

First up, Taylor Swift in a teal Kaufman Franco sheath. Surprise, surprise, the teenager yet again chose a sequined number. The first few were cute, but this one hung rather funny with its off-the-shoulder look and made the gangly singer a little ganglier than usual. Points for wearing a gown, though. C+

Rihanna donned this be-feathered white Elie Saab gown. The hair's a mess. The dress looks like it's about to choke her. And that is not a flattering drape across her hips. F

Pink chose an ombre mermaid gown, that I actually didn't hate. It still had a hard edge to suit the rocker's style, but was glammed enough for an awards show. B-

Nicole Kidman played the supportive wife in this gorgeous silk Prada gown. I'm not a fan of the side boob, but her hair looks lovely and the front ruffle makes me swoon. Not to mention the way the dress fits her perfectly. A-

Miley Cyrus and her ratty hair showed up in this uninspired Herve Leger mini. No matter how many necklaces you put on, or how edgy you think your dress is, we will all still think of you as Hannah Montana. Sorry, Miley. D

Lea Michele continued her reign as the queen of the red carpet in this event-appropriate midnight blue Romona Keveza mini. I love the strong eye and light lip. And I love the use of blue over the oft-used black. I'm just worried she's getting too skinny... or is that just me? A

Okay, this is where my normal judgey fashionista eye is shelved for the Grammys. At any other awards show, I'd poo poo this getup and run away screaming. But, since it's the Grammys, I must say I am totally in love with Lady Gaga in this custom Giorgio Armani... outfit(?) can we call it an outfit? It's just so very her, and ridiculous, but artistic at the same time. I mean, she's holding some sort of space strobe or something. The shape of the dress is really quite pleasing, I seriously love it. Though I'm not fond of the shoes. A-

Ke$ha loses points automatically for making me use a dollar sign in her name. What is that??? Anyway, now to discuss her gold flapper mini by Nicolas Jebron. I find it rather boring and uninspired for someone who uses symbols in her name. And the shoes are far too heavy and dark to go with the light flow of the dress. C-

Keri Hilson knocked my socks off in this gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana gown. She apparently didn't get the "dress like a crazy person for the Grammys" memo, and I'm glad she didn't. Her hair was beautiful, her skin soft and glowing, and the dress soft and light. That is until I do the scroll down. why the mermaid poof? I don't know why it couldn't just be a soft flow out instead of something so dramatic. maybe she did get the memo afterall.... B+

I know Katy Perry just got engaged in India, but this supposedly "Bollywood inspired" dress was a hot mess. The gold bindhi was a no. The nude dress and gold flowers made me gag. I seriously could not believe the dress was by Zac Posen. ZAC POSEN. He of the gorgeous feminine dresses I love. So sad. F

Fergie had a gorgeous color choice in this mini by Pucci. Event-appropriate, but still well styled. She almost doesn't look like a drag queen for once.... A

Ciara was a hot mess in this "futuristic" Givenchy number. Maybe she was borrowing something from Lady Gaga's closet? F.

Oh, Carrie, awards season is not the time to try out wedding dresses. This white Edition by Georges Chakra looked so sad and confused, like the designer was on a Project Runway challenge and ran out of time to affix the straps properly. D

Poor Brit Brit tried to retake her "Pop Princess" title from Lady Gaga in this sheer and pantsless gaga-like look from Dolce & Gabbana. What's even sadder is, if the overlay wasn't sheer, and was actually a dress, it might have been kinda flattering on her. F

A repeat offender in not having a clue how to best dress her body shape is Beyonce. Once again the singer made herself look huge and completely heinous in this monstrous beige aztec-inspired number. F

The usually adorable Kristen Bell came out with this black and gold choke-hold number. Her locks are a mess and the dress, aside from looking like it might strangle her, is a sack. D

Sheryl Crow was a total snore in this boring black, shapeless Bottega Veneta Gladiola dress. F

Apparently Victoria Beckham's clothing line has sizes beyond 0 and 2, as evidenced by Jennifer Hudson's stepping out in this black and modern VB dress. I might have liked it except a) the shoulders are too sharp, b) it looks like her boobs are about to make a run for it. C

Colbie Caillat looked young and fresh from the neck up, and old and jessica rabbit wannabe from the neck down. Despite its curves, this gold dress really fell flat for me. C+

Ugh, I'm getting bored of these gold weird dresses. Ashanti gets a D. Next!

And just to switch things up a bit, I give you the battle of the boy bands: Green Day v. The Jonas Brothers. Both groups came nicely dressed. Both groups coordinated with their members. One has a bit of a rock edge, the other has a bit of a James Bond casual day edge. And yet I like them both. Which do you like better?

Oh dear, Malin Ackerman. I'm not sure why you were even at the Grammys, but I'm pretty sure it was not to do be a backup dancer in a future robot hoochies from outerspace dance tribute to Michael Jackson. F.

Mary J. Blige donned a pink cutout Gucci gown. While I don't think it's actually that flattering up top, I'm going to say the look fits the singer. B+

What do you think readers? Agree? Disagree? Did I miss any of your faves?
