Reader Question - Formal International Wedding Wear

I'm attending a wedding in Spain next month. It's a formal affair where, I'm told, most women will be wearing full-length gowns. I haven't bought a full length dress in years and hate everything in my closet. I'm looking for something new and sassy that packs well - keep in mind I will be travelling in Spain for two weeks prior to the wedding with the dress packed into a suitcase. But usually "packs well" means jersey and while, for reasons I can't explain, almost all the full length dresses I've seen are jersey, that is too casual for a formal event. Which makes you wonder who is shopping for a casual jersey full-length gown. But that is neither here nor there. Also keep in mind: 1) I won't do strapless - full length gowns are too heavy to stay up and I'll be tugging on the dress all night and no one likes a girl who tugs on her strapless dress all night, not to mention the fact that I look bad in strapless dresses, and 2) the dress has to be under $500. Why? I have no idea, I just made that up as my dollar limit and I won't pay a penny over (before tax, that is).

What an interesting question! I can tell you are hot, well-dressed, fabulous, and worldly...

Okay, you got me, it's me. I'm the reader. But I assure you that this is a real question (from me) and all the parameters are real. So with the mission set, I went through the world of online gowns and found out that, if they're not jersey and automatically out, they're almost all one-shouldered and almost all have the same rosette look. I'm not sure what to make of that. I haven't tried on anything one-shouldered, so maybe it will work... Also, online gown shopping is the pits. The selection is terrible. Looks like I'll be making an in-person shopping excursion to all the big departments stores -- Neiman's, Bloomies, Nordies, Saks, Barneys -- this weekend. But here are some of the online options I've found.

Nicole Miller, was $429, sale $386.10

Aqua, $248
