Dressing With the Stars: Inaugural Style

Happy inauguration, everyone! We've just entered into a brighter, more hopeful, and much needed era in this country. Not only is there an African American man in the White House, not only does our new President drive a car run on alternative fuel sources, but we also have the best dressed First Lady the White House has seen since Jackie O. As always, I'll be here keeping watch as the Secretary of Fashion to give you the breakdown on style choices and show where you can get the look for yourself.

Let's start first with a non-fashion image. I just want to share how heartwarming it is to see pictures of these two and how much they totally love and adore each other. Looking at pictures of them brings joy to even my icy heart and a tear to my eye.

Okay, sappy portion over, time to talk clothes.

Obama Kids

I am so excited to have young children in the White House again. Barbara and Jenna were much too old for my entertainment (though their drunken shenanigans were awfully amusing, and Jenna did make a lovely bride); and Chelsea was... well, she didn't grow into her looks until much later in life.

But back to Malia and Sasha. These two were so adorable at the inauguration, with Malia snapping photos and Sasha making silly faces. And, according to the J.Crew website, they were adorably dressed in custom-made outfits from J.Crew. J.Crew may not have the exact coats available, but they do have these coats to dress your own kiddies. Get the look:

The Second Lady
Jill Biden is a hot woman for her age. She's tiny and pretty, but I must say she absolutely does not dress appropriately for her age. It seems she wants to compete with Michelle, a woman 20 years her junior, in the fashion department and I don't really approve. Her outfits are great... but just are for someone a lot younger than her.

KNEE HIGH BOOTS! The woman wore KNEE HIGH BOOTS to the inauguration! The inauguration is not the time to be super trendy, why not go for a nice pair of pumps instead? Mrs. Cheney's footwear is much better; she knew what she was doing that day. Venue appropriateness aside, it was a cute oufit. Get the look:

And now for the ball:
Another lovely red for Jill. It's a great color on her. And the Reem Acra dress is really beautiful. Can I just say, though, that strapless dresses are inappropriate on a woman her age. Oh, Jilly, we're going to have a talk or else there's going to be trouble over the next 4 years, I can tell.

BEST DRESSED FIRST LADY IN AGES
And now for my personal fashion crush - First Lady Michelle Obama. The woman is tall, with gorgeous skin, and a great sense of her figure and how to dress it stylishly.

Unfortunately, I think her Isabel Toledo ensemble was a little off the mark. The dress is pretty and I enjoy the embellished neckline. The matching printed sparkly overcoat was too much for me. That's just too matchy matchy for my tastes. I would've much preferred had she topped that dress with a great winter white coat like this:

Burberry, Sale $476.90
Loved her J.Crew gloves, though. Sadly, couldn't find them online :(

Get the look, sort of (yellow is SO hard to find as it is not summer):

BCBG, $238

And now the ball....
Mrs. O chose a floral, one-shouldered Jason Wu creation that just popped against her skin and looked adorable with her husband's white tie. I love love love this dress. I always love an interesting neckline, and this dress definitely had it. And I always love feminine touches that don't go too far into making something very traditional and boring. And this dress's floral design definitely accomplished that as well. I am swooning in love. Mind if I cut in?
