Two Reader Questions in One: Pencil Skirts

Today's post lets me answer two readers at once: 1) Continuing the EWP essentials post from yesterday, and 2) a different reader had asked for a post on pencil skirts for work. I love when I can make multiple people happy at the same time.

Now, back to the basics. These series of posts are talking about what few items I would swear by on a small budget. We're keeping it lean and simple here folks.

Today's post is about a work staple, the one item I don't think any career gal can live without: the pencil skirt. There's something about a pencil skirt that makes you look professional and really good at the same time.

Now with all staples that you would wear often, I would recommend spending the extra money to get a good quality one so it'll last you. But if that's just not an option, there are very low end pencil skirts available. Yes, you can wear a Forever 21 skirt to work. Just be sure to make sure the length is appropriate for work and that it fits properly. Also be aware that these cheapie items are not going to last as long, so be ready for it fall apart at the seams within a year (as I had happen to me while at work all the way up the back seam to my behind. TG I was wearing tights. And was able to run away and never be seen again... )

My absolute favorite favorite favorite pencil skirt is from J.Crew. It's a little pricier, but the quality totally shows. I love it so much I got it in four colors, which is actually hard to do when you're only buying neutrals (black, navy, brown, pinstripe). But as we're talking essentials, I suggest you just start with one.
